Yogeshwar bags berth to Olympics

As the nation was fully overwhelmed with the Indo-Pakistan T20 yesterday, Star wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt has bagged an Olympic quota in the men’s 65 kg freestyle category at the ongoing Asian qualifying tournament.

In the first round, Yogeshwar won against Korea’s Ju Song Kim 8-1 before defeating Xuan Dinh Nguyen of Vietnam in the quarter-finals. The Indian had opened up a huge 12-2 lead over his Vietnamese opponent.
In the semi-final, Yogeshwar overcame Seungchul Lee of Korea 7-2. He thus bagged an Olympic spot as the top two wrestlers in each category are being awarded Olympic quotas.

Among other Indians in the men’s freestyle competition, Rahul Aware (57kg) and Satyawart Kadiyan (97kg) missed out on securing quota places in their respective categories after crashing out in the semi-finals.

It is to be noted that Narsingh Pancham Yadav had bagged a quota place in the men’s 74kg freestyle division in Las Vegas last year, for the Olympics to be held at Rio. And now, Yogeshwar joins the list.

Also, the Indian shooters have won 12 quota places for the Olympics. The team of shooters setting out for Rio is finalized – Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang, Chain Singh, Jitu Rai, Gurpreet Singh, Prakash Nanjappa, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Kynan Chenai, Mairaj Ahmad Khan, Apurvi Chandela, Ayonika Paul and Heena Sidhu.
